Lovely Autumn Day to Start Creatine Loading

I took the camera today when I exercised the labradoodle. I rode the mountain bike and the dog ran alongside on the bike lead. I wrote about this in an earlier post Labradoodle traing pard

My wife is buying the three month creatine supply for me from Argos today. I hand intended to get the 7 day loading period in by Wednesday as my annual spirometry tests are on Thursday. So the tests should fall on my 4th day of loading.

Here is a linkie about Creatine in COPD

Creatine results of medical trial

And some more piccies of the lake area where I run the dog.

Ju Jitsu Ground Fighting

It was once said that weebles wobble but they don't stay down. Being built now along weeble lines I can say, judging upon yesterdays groundfights, that is not entirely true.

The good news is that I appear to have had my besrt breathing result so far. Three ground fights at the end of the 2 hour ju jitsu session.

But on the minus side I did feel as if I could have given a bit more energy and also that I am now hampered by a couple of age related things. To whit one beer belly that has introduced the weeble wobbles but he stays fell down factor... and the time that now elapses between my brain thinking of a move and my body finally attempting to comply with the brain's instructions. Thought and deed are now separated by quite a pause and immediate response is a memory only ...

I should start my creatine loading week so as it ends with the spirometry testing on 15th.

If I want to improve my pretty poor groundfight I will either have to make my legs heavier or slim off the beer belly. So as to lower my centre of gravity.

When I started ju jitsu a couple of months ago I was 18 stone 4. I am now 17 stone 6

Gotta keep going.

Training with Ju JItsu Weapons

The visiting ju jitsu blackbelt weapons specialist guy did his visiting instruction and very interesting it was. We used nunchaku and bo staff (illustrated by images). Brought home to me how much we (meaning I) lose co-ordination when older. I have ordered a set of nunchaku and a six foot red oak bo staff to use at home as it should prove good CV exercise and co-ordination/concentration practice (to avoid wrapping the things round yer own head at least)

I have spirometry tests due 15th October and hence plan to start a creatine loading period around 7th October. I will do some search on google re creatine and COPD.

PLB with Gumshield In

I did a lot of preparation for today's 2 hour ju jitsu session

I got a bay dug at the allotment with a bit of uphill barrow pushing to tip hard composting. I got home 8.30 AM and took a peak flow of 330 lpm.

Then I did circuits of 4.5 mph slow jog on treadmill 1.5 minutes, skipping, punchbag. 3 circuits.

Then in the steam room where if did Buteyko breathing. Got control pause up to 47 seconds.

After steam room Peak Flow 390 lpm

Shower. Breakfast. Relax shallow breathing. Clean teeth. Ju jitsu.

Again we did what is emerging to be the most therapeutic sequence for me. Warms ups, circuit training, technique training and finish with one ground fight. Then relax and get rid of any overbreathing before driving home.

Next week we have a visiting black belt instructor who specializes in weapons .. staff, nunchaku etc

I have put my gumshield down the garden gym now ready to train in it a bit to practice PLB whilst wearing it. We are not alloed to spar without a gumshield.

Back to important stuff .. training in COPD

I wish the paving slabs I have been laying were as small as the piccie. I earned a few bob laying over 100 slabs but I copped cement dust as a lung irritant. Should have work a filter mask.

Result seems to have been a 30% reduction in my half hour treadmill performance. Got to the ju jitsu session last night. It was a relatively easy session just going through the techniques which we will be tested on for our first grading.

What seems to be emerging as my best ju jitsu workout routine is warm up on mat ... circuits (doing kickboxing style skipping, focus pad and kick pad sessions) followed by technique training and ending with either pure groundwork fighting (starting sat back to back) or a sparring session where controlled punches and kicks can be used. locks throws, strangles and take downs to groundwork. Thus the high CV demand stuff occurs at the end of the session. Then take time to empty overinflated lungs before driving home to a great night sleep. (Always a good night after a ju jitsu scrap and up at 5 AM raring to get some work done).

I am still finding it difficult to get the PLB going as I am struggling using a lot of isometric strength on groundwork. All I can say so far is I always feel better next morning !

I am still wondering when Ann is going to do a Tuesday tune to "Applejack".

I am about to start a creatine loading period. Usually this improves spirometry results.
